چکیده

CONWAY and HINGERTY1) showed that feeding of rats with K-free diet produced high Na and low K contents in muscle, the K loss being greater than the Na gain during a short time of K-deficiency, but that a further decrease in K content by feeding of K-free diets from 4 to 26 days was compensated by an equivalent gain of Na. COOKE et al.2) demonstrated also in the rat skeletal muscle made K-deficient for 3 weeks that an increase in the intracellular sodium concentration, •kNa•li, amounted approximately to twothirds of a decrease in the intracellular potassium concentration, •kK•li, and that the ionic content was restored to the normal value by application of K-salt to K-deficient rats. Somewhat similar movement of Na and K in the rat muscle was observed by MUNTWYLER and GRIFFIN3) during development of K-deficiency and during the recovery from it. In addition, these studies showed that change in plasma K in K-deficient rats was related closely to K loss and Na gain in muscles, although the results are not extensive enough to reveal successive changes in the electrolyte composition of plasma or muscles during the course of K-depletion. On the other hand, DRAHOTA and GUTMANN4) reported that the K content of chronically denervated extensor digitorum longus muscle (EDL) resembled an innervated soleus muscle (SOL). An increase of •kNa•li and a decrease of CKJi in both SOL and EDL have also been observed by KIYOHARA and KOBAYASHI5) following denervation of muscles, and the cation content of denervated EDLs resemble that of SOLs. Similar findings were reported on both human and animals with muscular dystrophy6-8). Therefore, the object of the present investigation was first to examine changes in the ionic composition of the plasma and muscles of rats during K-deficiency, secondly to learn whether or not •kNa•li and •kK•li in chronically

CATION, AND PHOSPHATE CONTENT OF-MUSCLE* WITH A NOTE ON THE CARBON DIOXIDE CONTENT OF HUMAN MUSCLE BY LYTT I. GARDNER,:~ ELSIE A. MAcLACHLAN, AND HELEN BERMAN

I t has previously been demonstrated that dietary potassium deficiency in animals is associated with low serum chloride and elevated serum bicarbonate concentration (1-5). In 1950 the present authors described a decrease of intracellular carbon dioxide in the skeletal muscle of potassium-deficient rats (6), an observation which has since been confirmed by others (7). The present communication p...

Effect of Potassium Deficiency on Carbon Dioxide, Cation, and Phosphate Content of Muscle

Albino rats weighing 160 to 175 gm. were fed a complete synthetic diet containing 0.003 per cent potassium and 0.7 per cent sodium for 40 days. Controls were given the same diet plus adequate added potassium. 1. Data from analyses of serum and skeletal muscle showed (a) a fall in serum chloride concentration and an increase in serum carbon dioxide concentration and pH in the potassium-deficient...

Effect of sympathetic denervation on the rate of protein synthesis in rat skeletal muscle.

Rates of protein synthesis were investigated in skeletal muscles from rats submitted to chemical and surgical sympathectomy. Three models of sympathetic denervation were used: 1) treatment with guanethidine (100 mg.kg(-1).day(-1) sc); 2) lumbar sympathetic denervation (surgical excision of the second and third lumbar ganglia of the sympathetic chain, from which arises the postganglionic fibers ...

Comparison of gene expression of 2-mo denervated, 2-mo stimulated-denervated, and control rat skeletal muscles.

Loss of innervation in skeletal muscles leads to degeneration, atrophy, and loss of force. These dramatic changes are reflected in modifications of the mRNA expression of a large number of genes. Our goal was to clarify the broad spectrum of molecular events associated with long-term denervation of skeletal muscles. A microarray study compared gene expression profiles of 2-mo denervated and con...

Maintenance of sodium and potassium ions in rat skeletal muscle fibers by serum.

1. Rat soleus (SOL) and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscles, stored for 2-6hrs at 30•Ž in Krebs' solution with rat serum in higher concentration than 2%, showed low internal Na and high internal K concentrations as compared with control muscles stored in the normal saline solution. Such a serum effect on the EDL muscles decreased with lowering of temperature of the external solution. 2. The...
